You do not need to be an influencer to be a creator
Here is the difference beween the two.
As I dabble deeper into the creator economy, I often see the word ‘influencer’ and ‘creator’ used interchangeably.
This used to bother me because I would think: how can I be a creator when I don’t relate to being an influencer at all?
I don’t have a large audience
I am not famous for anything
I don’t focus my content on my life’s aesthetics or day-to-day happenings
What I post about my personal life and family is intentionally limited
Having brand collaborations to endorse products or services is not what drives me
Here is an example of a great mum influencer.
What I want to be known online for is:
Sharing new ideas
Maximizing the benefits of web3
Building useful things online
Building and a community of amazing mums (YOU!)
Here is an example of a great creator mum who I can relate to.
There is definitely an overlap between the two because:
Both create content
Both have an audience
In my opinion, the main difference between them lies in the intent of the content.
Influencers are out to ‘influence’ or persuade; creators are out their to tell stories, share their ideas.
“Within digital culture, the term influencer typically connotes someone specializing in advertorial, with an ability to persuade audiences to buy things. Creator, by contrast, evokes someone making art, motivated by their vocation rather than the likelihood that their content will attract sponsorship” - Sophie Bishop, writer.
In summary, you do not need to be an influencer to be a creator. You just need to want to share your knowledge, and optimize the wonders of the internet to do so.
Influencers monetize their life, creators monetize their ideas and skills.
Whether you want to be an influencer or a creator is up to you. You just need to know what suits you best.
Is being a creator for you?
In my latest e-guide on how the creator economy can help mums achieve time and financial freedom, I included a quiz that will help you determine if you have a creator in you.
The quiz is on pages 10-12. It will take you 30 seconds.
Hit reply and tell me what you scored!
Have a great week.
