As a mum of 2 small kids, I can’t help thinking (and freaking out) about this video.
I have recently started my own online business for which I am showing up online a lot more as I use the power of the internet and social media to market what I am doing.
I never used to share pictures of my kids, but lately I've been including them in photos with me here in my newsletter and on social media. I am after all building a community of working mums and teaching them how to use AI to work smarter and faster.
So I’m definitely all for new technology and truly believe in its transformational power for us all. Heck, it’s the foundation of the business I am building!
However, this video is a harsh reminder for us all, especially as parents, that AI is like any tool: it can be used both for good and for harm.
Although I believe in the good of humanity and that new tech like AI will be a ‘net good’ for the world, this video made paranoia seep into me.
It snapped me out of my "AI for good" vision and tossed me into a vortex of doom, tinted through the lens of a mother who whilst is excited for what the future holds, is also fearful of the unknown and what that could mean for her children.
I now feel like I need to be more conscious and careful about what I post online, especially when it comes to my kids.
And on the back of that are so many other questions:
How are we as parents meant to navigate two sides of the same coin?
How can we reap the benefits of this incredible new technology whilst protecting the future of our kids?
What do our kids need to know about new technology as they grow older?
How can we draw a line between the unbelievable opportunities presented to us and the inherent dangers?
How can we enjoy new tech without paranoia taking over?
I don’t think anyone has any answers.
So whilst this new technology is truly life changing and its potential must be reaped, keeping in mind the dangers is as important.
Awareness is the first step I guess.
